Crypto-Powered: Understanding Bitcoin, Ethereum, and DeFi
Until one understands the basics of this tech, they won’t be able to grasp or appreciate the impact it has on our digital bank, Genesis Block.

This is the second post of Crypto-Powered — a new series that examines what it means for Genesis Block to be a digital bank that’s powered by crypto, blockchain, and decentralized protocols.
---
Our previous post set the stage for this series. We discussed the state of consumer finance and how the success of today’s high-flying fintech unicorns will be short-lived as long as they’re building on legacy finance — a weak foundation that is ripe for massive disruption.
Instead, the future of consumer finance belongs to those who are deeply familiar with blockchain tech & decentralized protocols, build on it as the foundation, and know how to take it to the world. Like Genesis Block.
Today we begin our journey down the crypto rabbit hole. This post will be an important introduction for those still learning about Bitcoin, Ethereum, or DeFi (Decentralized Finance). This post (and the next few) will go into greater detail about how this technology gives Genesis Block an edge, a superpower, and an unfair advantage. Let’s dive in…

Bitcoin: The First Cryptocurrency

There are plenty of online resources to learn about Bitcoin (Coinbase, Binance, Gemini, Naval, Alex Gladstein, Marc Andreessen, Chris Dixon). I don’t wanna spend a lot of time on that here, but let’s do a quick overview for those still getting ramped up.
Cryptocurrency is the most popular use-case of blockchain technology today. And Bitcoin was the first cryptocurrency to be invented.
Bitcoin is the most decentralized of all crypto assets today — no government, company, or third party can control or censor it.
Bitcoin has two primary features (as do most other cryptocurrencies):
  1. Send Value You can send value to anyone, anywhere in the world. Nobody can intercept, delay or stop it — not even governments or financial institutions. Unlike with traditional money transfers or bank wires, there are no layers of middlemen. This results in a process that is much more cost-efficient. Some popular use-cases include remittances and cross-border payments.
  2. Store Value With nothing but a smartphone, you can become your own bank and store your own funds. Nobody can seize your assets. The funds are digital and stored on a blockchain. Your money no longer needs to be stored at a bank, in a vault, or under your mattress. I covered a few inspiring use-cases in a previous post. They include banking the unbanked, protecting assets from government seizure, mitigating the risk of a bank run, and protection against hyperinflation (like what recently happened in Venezuela).
The fact that there are so few things one can do with Bitcoin is one of its greatest strengths.
Its design is simple, elegant, and focused. It has been 10+ years since Satoshi’s white paper and no one has been able to crack or hack the Bitcoin network. With a market cap of $170B, there is plenty of incentive to try.

Public Awareness

A few negative moments in Bitcoin’s history include the collapse of Mt. Gox — which resulted in hundreds of millions of customer funds being stolen — as well as Bitcoin’s role in dark markets like Silk Road — where Bitcoin arguably found its initial userbase.
However, like most breakthrough technology, Bitcoin is neither good nor bad. It’s neutral. People can use it for good or they can use it for evil. Thankfully, it’s being used less and less for illicit activity. Criminals are starting to understand that transactions on a blockchain are public and traceable — it’s exactly the type of system they usually try to avoid. And it’s true, at this point “a lot more” crimes are actually committed with fiat than crypto.
As a result, the perception of bitcoin and cryptocurrency has been changing over the years to a more positive light.
Bitcoin has even started to enter the world of media & entertainment. It’s been mentioned in Hollywood films like Spiderman: Into the Spider-Verse and in songs from major artists like Eminem. It’s been mentioned in countless TV shows like Billions, The Simpsons, Big Bang Theory, Gray’s Anatomy, Family Guy, and more.
As covid19 has ravaged economies and central banks have been printing money, Bitcoin has caught the attention of many legendary Wall Street investors like Paul Tudor Jones, saying that Bitcoin is a great bet against inflation (reminding him of Gold in the 1970s).
Cash App already lets their 25M users buy Bitcoin. It’s rumored that PayPal and Venmo will soon let their 325M users start buying Bitcoin. Bitcoin is by far the most dominant cryptocurrency and is showing no signs of slowing down. For more than a decade it has delivered on its core use-cases — being able to send or store value.
At this point, Bitcoin has very much entered the zeitgeist of modern pop culture — at least in the West.

Ethereum: Programmable Money

When Ethereum launched in 2015, it opened up a world of new possibilities and use-cases for crypto. With Ethereum Smart Contracts (i.e. applications), this exciting new digital money (cryptocurrency) became a lot less dumb. Developers could now build applications that go beyond the simple use-cases of “send value” & “store value.” They could program cryptocurrency to have rules, behavior, and logic to respond to different inputs. And always enforced by code. Additional reading on Ethereum from Linda Xie or Vitalik Buterin.
Because these applications are built on blockchain technology (Ethereum), they preserve many of the same characteristics as Bitcoin: no one can stop, censor or shut down these apps because they are decentralized.
One of the first major use-cases on Ethereum was the ability to mint and create your own token, your own cryptocurrency. Many companies used this as a way to fundraise from the public. This led to the 2017 ICO bubble (Initial Coin Offerings). Some tokens — and the apps/networks they powered — were fascinating and innovative. Most tokens were pointless. And many tokens were outright scams. Additional token reading from Fred Ehrsam, Balaji, and Naval.

Digital Gold Rush

Just as tokens grew in popularity in 2017–2018, so did online marketplaces where these tokens could be bought, sold, and traded. This was a fledgling asset class — the merchants selling picks, axes, and shovels were finally starting to emerge.
I had a front-row seat — both as an investor and token creator. This was the Wild West with all the frontier drama & scandal that you’d expect.
Binance — now the world’s largest crypto exchange —was launched during this time. They along with many others (especially from Asia) made it really easy for speculators, traders, and degenerate gamblers to participate in these markets. Similar to other financial markets, the goal was straightforward: buy low and sell high.
https://preview.redd.it/tytsu5jnfu951.jpg?width=600&format=pjpg&auto=webp&s=fe3425b7e4a71fa953b953f0c7f6eaff6504a0d1
That period left an embarrassing stain on our industry that we’ve still been trying to recover from. It was a period rampant with market manipulation, pump-and-dumps, and scams. To some extent, the crypto industry still suffers from that today, but it’s nothing compared to what it was then.
While the potential of getting filthy rich brought a lot of fly-by-nighters and charlatans into the industry, it also brought a lot of innovators, entrepreneurs, and builders.
The launch and growth of Ethereum has been an incredible technological breakthrough. As with past tech breakthroughs, it has led to a wave of innovation, experimentation, and development. The creativity around tokens, smart contracts, and decentralized applications has been fascinating to witness. Now a few years later, the fruits of those labors are starting to be realized.

DeFi: Decentralized Finance

So as a reminder, tokens are cryptocurrencies. Cryptocurrencies can carry value. And value is a lot like money. Because tokens are natively integrated with Ethereum, it’s been natural for developers to build applications related to financial services — things like lending, borrowing, saving, investing, payments, and insurance. In the last few years, there has been a groundswell of developer momentum building in this area of financial protocols. This segment of the industry is known as DeFi (Decentralized Finance).
https://preview.redd.it/f0sjzqspfu951.png?width=461&format=png&auto=webp&s=8e0a31bf29250fc624918fbd8514b008762f379e
In Q2 of 2020, 97% of all Ethereum activity was DeFi-related. Total DeFi transaction volume has reached $11.5B. The current value locked inside DeFi protocols is approaching $2 Billion (double from a month ago). DeFi’s meteoric growth cannot be ignored.
Most of that growth can be attributed to exciting protocols like Compound, Maker, Synthetix, Balancer, Aave, dYdX, and Uniswap. These DeFi protocols and the financial services they offer are quickly becoming some of the most popular use-cases for blockchain technology today.
https://preview.redd.it/wn3phnkqfu951.png?width=800&format=png&auto=webp&s=02f56caa6b94aa59eadd6e368ef9346ba10c7611
This impressive growth in DeFi certainly hasn’t come without growing pains. Unlike with Bitcoin, there are near-infinite applications one can develop on Ethereum. Sometimes bugs (or typos) can slip through code reviews, testing, and audits — resulting in loss of funds.
Our next post will go much deeper on DeFi.

Wrap Up

I know that for the hardcore crypto people, what we covered today is nothing new. But for those who are still getting up to speed, welcome! I hope this was helpful and that it fuels your interest to learn more.
Until you understand the basics of this technology, you won’t be able to fully appreciate the impact that it has on our new digital bank, Genesis Block. You won’t be able to understand the implications, how it relates, or how it helps.
After today’s post, some of you probably have a lot more questions. What are specific examples or use-cases of DeFi? Why does it need to be on a blockchain? What benefits does it bring to Genesis Block and our users?
In upcoming posts, we answer these questions. Today’s post was just Level 1. It set the foundation for where we’re headed next: even deeper down the crypto rabbit hole.

IRS Gets Serious About Crypto With Amendments To Form 1040 Regulators are taking cryptocurrencies more and more seriously, and the U.S. Internal Revenue Service (IRS) seems to be leading the way with a plan to obtain more accurate information from taxpayers regarding their financial activities with cryptocurrencies. A new checkbox on Form 1040 now asks taxpayers whether “at anytime during 2019 did [they] received, sell, send, exchanged or otherwise acquire any financial interest in any virtual currency.” The IRS put this new checkbox at the top of Schedule 1, so it does not appear directly as a declarable income on the front page of Form 1040. However, taxpayers are not exempt from declaring this information even though they are not obligated to file Schedule 1.

This past week, BTC gained strong bullish momentum above the $8,300 and $8,350 resistances against the US Dollar. The BTC/USD pair climbed more than 5% and broke the $8,500 and $8,700 resistance levels. Moreover, there was a close above $8,500 and the 100 simple moving average (4-hours). A new monthly high was formed near the $8,934 level and later the price started a sharp downward move.
The price broke the $8,800 and $8,500 support levels. Additionally, there was a break below the 50% Fib retracement level of the upward move from the $7,763 low to $8,934 high. More importantly, there was a break below a key bullish trend line with support near $8,420 on the 4-hours chart of the BTC/USD pair. The pair even traded below the $8,350 support area.
At the moment, the price is consolidating losses above the $8,300 support area. It seems like there is a strong support forming near the $8,300 level and the 100 simple moving average (4-hours). Moreover, the 61.8% Fib retracement level of the upward move from the $7,763 low to $8,934 high is also near the $8,300. If there is a downside break below the $8,300 support area, bitcoin price could move back into a bearish zone.
The next key support area is near the $8,250 level, below which it could move towards the $8,000 level. On the upside, there is a major hurdle forming near the $8,500 and $8,550 levels. A convincing close above the $8,550 resistance area could set the tone for more upsides in the coming sessions.

Top 5 Biggest Token Sales of All Time

Top 5 Biggest Token Sales of All Time

2017 was the golden era of token sales, with cryptocurrency projects routinely raising tens of millions of dollars as investors were frantically searching for “the next Bitcoin”. The market was clearly overheated, and ICOs saw a sharp decline in 2018, both in terms of the number of projects and the amount of money raised, as prices of top cryptocurrencies were subjected to harsh price corrections.
In 2019, we’ve seen the emergence of the IEO model, which has brought some life back to the token sale space. However, IEO projects generally stick to much more conservative funding targets than what we grew accustomed to in the 2017 ICO boom.
With that context in mind, let’s take a look at the 5 biggest token sales in history and briefly describe the situation of each project.

1. EOS (over $4 billion)

EOS EOS, -1.71% was the mother of all ICOs, raising over $4 billion in its year-long token sale which lasted from June 26, 2017 to June 1, 2018. The EOS mainnet launched on June 9, 2018.
EOS is a blockchain platform for smart contracts and decentralized applications that is based on a delegated proof-of-stake (DpoS) model. EOS holders stake their tokens to vote for validators, which in turn take care of the network’s consensus process.
So far, gaming and gambling are the most popular use cases for EOS, dominating the list of the most popular EOS DApps maintained by DappRadar.com. We can also find decentralized exchanges and various other DApps such as apps for chatting or receiving compensation for participating surveys.
Block.one, the firm that created the EOS.IO protocol, is currently working on a social media platform called Voice, which will function on top of EOS. In June, Block.one CEO Brandon Blumer said the company invested $150 million into the project.
EOS is currently the 7th largest crypto asset on the market, with a market capitalization of $2.65 billion. The token is changing hands at $2.85, and lost 52% of its value in the last year.

2. Telegram Open Network ($1.7 billion)

When rumors started circulating that Telegram was thinking about developing a blockchain network, the entire cryptocurrency space listend. After all, the messaging app is highly popular among cryptocurrency enthusiasts, with Telegram groups being at the core of many communities.
While there were many scammers claiming to give people the opportunity to participate in Telegram’s ICO, Telegram actually only offered the tokens to accredited investors on an invite-only basis. This hardly had an impact on the project’s ability to raise money, as investors poured in a whopping $1.7 billion.
The Telegram Open Network (TON) is not actually live yet, although the project is reportedly expected to go live with its mainnet before October 31. Telegram plans to integrate TON with its messaging application, which has over 200 million active users.

3. Unus Sed Leo ($1 billion)

The stunning success of Binance and its Binance Coin BNB, -3.64% token enticed countless exchanges to offer their own tokens, bringing special benefits to traders. While Bitfinex has been in the game for much longer than Binance, the exchange found itself in trouble when it could no longer access funds held on its behalf by a payment processing company called Crypto Capital. According to the New York Attorney General’s office, Bitfinex lost access to $850 million.
In response, Bitfinex decided to launch a token called Unus Sed Leo, offering 1 billion tokens at a price of 1 USDT apiece. The token sale was not open to the public, although anyone can now trade the Bitfinex Leo Token LEO, -0.54% token on supported exchanges.
The ultimate goal for the LEO token is for all the tokens in circulation to be bought back by Bitfinex and burned. Bitfinex uses at least 27% of its monthly revenues for this purpose, and also says it will use a large portion of any funds recovered from Crypto Capital or from the 2016 Bitfinex hack for the same purpose.
LEO is currently the 11th largest cryptocurrency, and retains a market cap of $1.03 billion. The token is currently trading at $1.03, but reached an all-time high at $2 on June 26.

4. TaTaTu ($575 million)

The strange name is not the only curious thing about the TaTaTu project. It was founded by Andrea Iervolino, an Italian film producer, and the company says that it raised $575 million in a 2018 sale of TTU tokens. The private sale reportedly included royalty and venture capital firms.
TaTaTu is perhaps best described as a variant of Netflix that uses the TTU token to incentivize both content producers and viewers. TTU tokens can be used to buy advertising or buy products in an online store.
However, it seems that TaTaTu does not have major plans connected to blockchain technology. As part of a CoinDesk report from June, the publication asked TaTaTu if it was a blockchain company. The firm responded:
“Not at all. We have one blockchain component in our system.”
According to the report, the project’s pivot away from blockchain has caused conflicts with the project’s early backers and co-founders, who feel that TaTaTu’s current direction does not adhere to the project’s original vision.

5. Filecoin ($257 million)

Filecoin raised $257 million through selling future rights to FIL tokens in 2017. The project is creating a decentralized network that allows users to rent out excess storage and receive tokens in return.
Despite the huge token sale, Filecoin is not live yet. However, the team has recently announced estimated dates for the launch of both the Filecoin testnet and mainnet. If everything goes according to plan, we can expect the Filecoin testnet in December of 2019 and the mainnet in March of 2020.

NEO Health

NEO Health
Dear NEO Health Community:
Firstly, I would like to thank everyone for your support since we opened the PeerAtlas Telegram last November. We are all in this together.
I will provide a brief history of PeerAtlas and NEO Health.
2011: The PeerAtlas project begins with the goal of launching a completely free library for high-quality medical information, and ultimately launch a live rolling clinical trial to collect outcome data on patients, which would prove or disprove the claims of pharmaceutical companies, becoming the most valuable medical database in the world.
2011-2016: PeerAtlas founder Brad Mattson codes an alpha version of a wiki-based medical algorithm encyclopedia while in medical school and training to become a radiologist. Development and marketing of the project is difficult during this time because the majority of Brad's time is consumed by the notoriously brutal schedule of a doctor in training…but the project continues. For those who don't know, doctors enjoy working longer hours than most for reasons that are unknown.
November 2016: Brad buys his first Bitcoin, watches the price of Bitcoin increase, and instantly becomes a crypto degenerate (AKA true believer) like several others before him. Brad watches all of his personal holdings get tied up in crypto over the next several months, and considers selling his house. In retrospect, I should have sold the house.
April 2017: Brad moves all of his crypto investments into Antshares because he reads on Reddit that Antshares has the best community and he enjoys supporting a Chinese project because his wife is Chinese. This really was all the research I did, but most people would recommend reading the whitepaper before making moves like this.
June 2017: Brad hopes to launch PeerAtlas on the platform of the future, and like any self-respecting crypto degenerate (AKA true believer), he believes the future of everything must be blockchain. Having so much respect for the strength of the Antshares community, Brad asks his wife and PeerAtlas co-founder, Ling Wu, to email Antshares founder, Da Hongfei. Da replies and talks to launch an ICO on Antshares begin.
July 2017: Antshares rebrands to NEO. PeerAtlas co-founder Colin Closser completes the first draft of the PeerAtlas whitepaper.
Early November 2017: The PeerAtlas team (Brad Mattson, Ling Wu, and Colin Closser) visits NEO headquarters in Shanghai and plans the launch of the PeerAtlas ICO.
Mid November 2017: The PeerAtlas Telegram is opened.
Late November 2017: Cryptocurrency markets and altcoins begin their climb to new all-time highs.
December 2017: The PeerAtlas project is presented at the NEO meetup in New York City. Cryptocurrency markets are out of control. The PeerAtlas Telegram begins daily quizzes with gas awards for first 10 winners. The quizzes take place for almost 5 months, with special thanks to Vivek, Raj, Melicio and several other members of the community for making this possible.
PeerAtlas co-founder Ling Wu with NEO founder Da Hongfei at the NEO meetup in New York City
Early January 2018: The PeerAtlas ICO page goes live. Cryptocurrency markets remain out of control. The SEC sets a date for early February to discuss ICOs, security tokens, and utility tokens. Obviously this means bad news for US-based ICOs.
Late January 2018: The PeerAtlas project is presented at the first-ever NEO DevCon in San Francisco.
February 2018: The SEC declares that all utility tokens are in fact security tokens. The PeerAtlas team consults dozens of lawyers for advice regarding the launch of a US-based ICO, and we get a different answer from every lawyer because nobody has any idea what's going on. PeerAtlas suspends plans to launch an ICO from the US against the advice of several lawyers who claim the SEC doesn't have the resources to investigate every single ICO. As it turns out, the SEC does have the resources to do this, and we watched several projects get shut down by the SEC.
March 2018: Cryptocurrency markets are not looking so great. The PeerAtlas team researches launching the project from a crypto-friendly country outside of the US. Research leads to Gibraltar, Liechtenstein, Malta, and Switzerland as possible options.
April 2018: Cryptocurrency markets are looking worse. The word on the streets is that Binance, the world's largest exchange, will be moving to Malta and the PeerAtlas team decides that wherever Binance is going is probably also where we should go. Legal negotiations begin in Malta and PeerAtlas officially becomes a Malta-based company.
Late April 2018: Cryptocurrency markets are still taking a dive, but PeerAtlas moves forward with plans to launch the token sale in May.
Early May 2018: Cryptocurrency markets still look terrible but are beginning to become more stable. PeerAtlas launches the presale on May 1st. Three days after the presale is launched Brad is contacted by iScientia (www.iscientia.com) founders Koen Vanneste and Laurent David to form a partnership. Brad recognizes that iScientia is a European leader in medical information and clinical decision support for almost 20 years with endorsements from the most well-respected medical journals and libraries, and accepts the partnership.
Mid May 2018: The PeerAtlas token sale is suspended while the goals of the project are updated after the partnership with iScientia. The project takes on a new direction with a drastically more ambitious scope.
June 2018: PeerAtlas and iScientia merge to form NEO Health, and begin building a completely web-based electronic medical record to integrate with the iScientia clinical decision support tool and digital health library which is currently operating in several European countries.
July 2018: Brad suspends his career as a radiologist and moves to Belgium to work on the project full time with iScientia.
Recent Events:
In what will go down as one of the most interesting experiences of my life, I traveled to Milan, Italy with iScientia co-founders Koen Vanneste and Laurent David where we had arranged a meeting with “investors”. We were asked to meet the “investors” in a coffee shop/bookstore outside of Milan. We waited in the bookstore for around 45 minutes before the “investors” finally showed up, one dressed normally and the other dressed in a full Giorgio Armani suit. The one dressed normally was carrying a large black bag. They treated us to a cup of coffee and discussed investing into our presale. They suggested that we take 2 million euro in cash from them and put it in the trunk of a rented car and drive it across several country borders back to Belgium, and then call it their investment in our project LOL. They asked if we could meet again the next day in an undisclosed location to finalize the deal, and asked us to bring a money counter with us the next time we meet. Does it look like I just fly in from New York and I'm carrying a money counter in my backpack? If I ever need to use a money counter for anything I'm going to get one of those green banker visors to go with it.
The next day the location of the meeting changed five times before we finally agreed to meet at a very shady restaurant like something you would see in a Martin Scorsese film. At this point I figured this must be someone's idea of a practical joke. They bought us a pretty nice dinner which was definitely appreciated, but we did not have a money counter and no money exchanged hands. I explained that we were thankful for their offer, but we simply cannot accept 2 million euro in cash, put it in the trunk of a rented car, and drive it back to Belgium LOL. The story actually gets more crazy, but to protect people's privacy and make sure we don't end up getting shot, I'm not going to go into more detail. For the record, NO CASH WAS ACCEPTED FROM ANYONE.
Over the past two weeks we have been quite busy beginning development of a completely web-based electronic medical record which we will integrate with the digital health library and clinical decision support tool from iScientia to provide doctors with clinical decision support at the point of care through the NEO Health EMR. We are also finishing the new whitepaper and building an ICO page.
NEO Health headquarters in Belgium, at the European Center for Implementation of Evidence-Based Guidelines
In addition, we met with Nigerian government officials and are hoping to deploy our software in Nigeria if we can come to an agreement. Nigeria would be an ideal place to launch NEO Health because there is less barrier to entry than in the United States or Europe where there are endless healthcare regulations and patient privacy laws. We feel the quality and access to healthcare in Nigeria would improve tremendously if doctors were using a modern electronic medical record system as opposed to paper charting which is currently the most common form of charting in Nigeria. We will also speak with select hospitals in China which will serve as test sites for NEO Health, before expanding further into China.
Thank you sincerely to the NEO Health community for your support! I will keep you updated with a weekly, or at most a bi-weekly newsletter.
Best Regards,
Brad Mattson MD
Founder of NEO Health

We have observed one of the biggest collapses of the US stock market in recent years. The technological index Nasdaq dropped by 4.43% over just one day. Stay in touch with the current events of the week covered in our analytical report.
We present to you the report filed by the analysts of our private club for October 22–28.
Main market events for October 22–28, 2018
1) Bakkt will be launched on December 12 if the regulators grant the permission.
2) Internal sources of the CBOE exchange claim that approval of Bitcoin ETF is inevitable. According to the SEC, VanEck, SolidX and CBOE resolved all the issues and it is only a matter of time before the new asset class is approved.
3) The Department of Financial Services (DFS) of New York has permitted Coinbase to develop Custody. The Bank of Japan admits that the bank may lose a lot of influence due to emergence of cryptocurrencies. $500m worth of USDT have been destroyed (burned) by Tether.
4) The Central Election Commission of Russia supported the initiative of the Party of Growth to run elections in Russia on blockchain, which would prevent doctoring of the results.
5) In June 2019, the Financial Action Task Force on Money Laundering (FATF) will start publishing its standards for international regulation of cryptocurrencies.
6) The British audit and consulting company Ernst & Young (EY) conducted a study on the efficiency of 110 ICO projects: only 1 out of 10 tokens managed to bring profit to their owners.
7) Constantinople — the hard fork of Ethereum network — is delayed until the beginning of 2019. The developers made this decision after discovering several bugs when launching the update in the test network.
8) Visa will launch a digital identification system on the B2B Connect blockchain in early 2019. The system would tokenize private information that ensures secure international transactions.
9) The Swiss online bank Swissquote now enables purchasing ICO tokens. You can buy them through an online bank account. Acquired tokens will be stored in a special wallet.
10) HTC has presented the first iteration of the blockchain smartphone Exodus 1 in Berlin. The smartphone is expected to go on sale in 34 countries this December. The device will cost 0.15 BTC or 4.78 ETH.
11) Blockchain platform for distributing video content TaTaTu, which raised $585 million during the ICO, signed an agreement with Johnny Depp. The actor’s film company Infinitum Nihil would produce movies and digital content for TaTaTu.
12) Chairman of the State Duma Committee on the Financial Market Anatoly Aksakov explained that absence of the concepts of “mining” and “bitcoin” in the draft law “On digital financial assets” hints to a “sad” future for cryptocurrencies.
13) The Japan Association of Virtual Currency Exchanges (JVCEA) received the right to self-regulation from the country’s main regulator, the Japan Financial Services Agency (FSA).
14) The Taiwan Financial Supervision Commission will simplify the procedure for launching ICOs in the country and fully legalize them.
15) Tether Limited burned 500 million USDT tokens. The company once again noted that any USDT owner could redeem their tokens with real US dollars that secure the cryptocurrency.
16) The branch of the China International Economic and Trade Arbitration Commission in Shenzhen decreed that the ownership of bitcoins in China should be considered legal.
17) The Ministry of Finance prohibited the British Royal Mint to issue the Royal Mint Gold (RMG) cryptocurrency, backed by gold.
18) Ripple published a financial report for the third quarter of 2018: sales of XRP tokens increased more than twofold and generated revenue of $163.33 million.
19) While the major stock indexes collapsed, Bitcoin continued to stand its ground. This refutes the widespread claims that the price of Bitcoin correlates with traditional finances. It’s worth noting that the current collapse of the US stock market is one of the biggest in recent years. The fall in the Nasdaq technology index, which dropped by 4.43% over the day, was especially disheartening. This is the biggest fall since August 2011.
20) The number of Google search requests for the word “Bitcoin” decreased by 93% compared to last December. This is quite natural, because back then the price of Bitcoin reached its peak.
2. Market analysis from club experts for October 22–28, 2018
The last week was hardly surprising for crypto traders and investors. Volatility, pumps/dumps, despair and enthusiasm — all the usual stuff.
Compared to the stock market though, the waves of the crypto market begin to look pale sometimes. The total capitalization remained in the $208–211 billion corridor for the entire week, despite the worries.
Trading volumes were also fairly stable: $9–11 billion. BTC dominated the market at 54% without deviations, although the Altcoins performed very good.
In the end of the week, the price for 1 BTC remained the same: $6480 on Monday and Sunday, though it fluctuated between $6380 and $6540 ($6478 at the time of the report) during the week.
However, the last week showed a strong growth of a number of coins, despite the price of BTC, and many coins skyrocketed from the levels below TOP100 CMC. Last week the stock market experienced a rather sharp fall, and according to reports, a number of stocks have incomparably higher volatility than many coins from TOP100.
The general sentiment makes it clear that cryptographic market is gaining increasingly more attention of institutional traders and very soon trading instruments will be available through a single terminal in any market.
In the meantime, the blockchain technology and cryptocurrency are gaining momentum in the world, and that’s great! Though some cypherpunks are not happy about this!
3. Changes in the cost and capitalization of the TOP-10 cryptocurrencies in the period of October 22–28, 2018

4. TOP-3 growing coins from the long-term portfolio for October 22–28, 2018 (including portfolio updates) The fastest growing portfolio coins: IOTeX + 50% (), Neblio NEBL + 40% (), Decred DCR + 15% (listing on Binance). The worst performing coin is Mysterium MYST -28% — correction of the growth during the last week.

Crypto Recap March 6: BTC Sellers Take Control, Support at $10k Back in Focus

Market Summary
As seen in CoinLive News Terminal.
A reality check for crypto traders, as the return of Bitcoin sellers sent a reminder of the state of affairs in the market. An environment dominated by unconvincingly feeble buy-side interest as we've been flagging up in recent times, with Google searches for Bitcoin and other related keywords at depressed levels, where a Bitcoin transaction takes one block to confirm and with a network value assigned to Bitcoin incongruent to the number of transactions through the network.
It looks as though the damage done to the multitude of retail accounts buying into the hype of the irrational exuberance in December has forced many to jump ship on the idea of re-engaging in buying cryptos even at current discounted prices. Throw into the mix the unclear regulatory landscape, and the absence of sufficient institutional capital flows, not yet coming in the amounts to make a distinctive difference, and it's easier to understand why the overall interest in cryptos has been on the decline.
Scanning through the top cryptos, as repeatedly mentioned, Bitcoin remains the magnet the rest of the Alts complex follows, and as a result, the 6% drop in BTC value led to similar negative percentage moves, with the exception of Vechain, up 4%. The total market value saw a slide from near $470b to currently stand at $440b. Despite the reduction in Bitcoin prices, the asset's dominance holds steady above the 40%, highest in 2018, which firms up the notion of a Bitcoin cycle phase.
